Bonga, ETHIOPIA

Ruth, a pregnant ethnic Sudanese Uduk teenager, is fanned by a midwife as she is in labour in the Bonga Refugee camp on the sudanese border. The Uduk tribe was threatened with extinction in 1989 when its population dwindled to around 7,000 as they fled to Ethiopia from Sudan during the civil war. Since then, the tribe's population has risen to over 17,000 in the camp where there are on average 100 births a year.
