Skip Jack and Big Eye Tuna is staple diet in Tuvalu, families go fishing and sell their catch on roadside stalls in the community where unemployment is rife.
Skipjack tuna is caught by fishing lure, no bait required whereas the pelagic species Yellow Fin, Big Eye or Albacore, bait and lure can be used. King Fish similar to barracuda, as in traditional times are caught using a noose to trap the fish and depends mostly on the timing of a master fisherman. The cost of fish has risen dramatically over the last 3 - 5 years. People are being forced to buy fish because of increased fuel costs, it is a risky business and a main menu item. Selling fish really only happens on the populated Funafuti; the outer-Islanders are fishing for their own daily use and possibly sharing with other families.
