Statue of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. In 1803 former slave and rebel leader Dessalines won the battle of Vertires against the French rulers. He proclaimed independence for Saint-Domingue and restored country's name, Haiti on 1st January 1804 when Haiti became the world's first black republic.
