Gereida, South Darfur, SUDAN

Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) soldiers, who are currently controlling Gereida, looking through the rubble of a nearby village that was burnt down at the end of 2006. Most of the villages in Southern Darfur have been attacked, looted and destroyed during the recent conflict. Government-backed Janjaweed militias and factions of Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) rebels (known as the non-signatories) have been terrorising the population of Darfur, provoking violence and widespread insecurity. In the countryside, where a state of lawlessness exists, villages are often looted and local people risk being attacked and raped by roaming militants.
