Dekhistan, Turkmenistan

Sunset over Misrian, once a flourishing Silk Road oasis town of 80,000 people, destroyed by the Mongols in 1223. A part of the mosque entrance and two big minarets are all that is left of the city. The trees in the middle of the former entrance gateway were planted by the former president Saparmurat Niyazov Turkmenbashi to put his stamp on the archeological site.
