Aytunc Akad

Gokceada, Aegean Sea, TURKEY

Swordfish caught by local fishermen are sorted and taken to be sold. The numbers here are in stark contrast to the huge quantities brought in by the trawlers and seine net boats, who kill large numbers of fish by using illegal techniques such as drift nets. The intense fishing techniques of trawlers and seine net boats are having a negative affect on the eco system and the livelihoods of local fishermen, who still use traditional fishing techniques, enabling them to chose only adult fish and avoid other unwanted sea creatures. A decision was made in 2009 to allow these trawlers to fish in the area for an extra 15 days, further reducing fish stocks and making it even harder for locals to eke out a living.
