Tens of thousands of Muslims streamed into makeshift refugee camps after angry Hindu mobs went on a spree of vengeance attacks, destroying Muslim shops and homes, and killing many people, in retaliation to a train bombing that killed 58. Troops arrived in Gujarat to stop the violence but were unable to quell the worst communal bloodshed in a decade. Officials put the death toll at more than 1,000 but human rights groups and opposition parties say it was closer to 2,000. More than 120,000 people were left homeless and hundreds of children made orphans.
