The Buddhist centre at Anuradhapura, also known as the 'City of Anuradha'. The city was founded in the 5th century BC and became the capital of the Sinhalese empire in 377 BC. The site, which was an international Buddhist pilgrimage destination before its abandonment in 1017, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (184)
