Tiengemeten, NETHERLANDS

The island of Tiengemeten, a small polder island south of Rotterdam, was an agricultural area for hondreds of years. Now the Natural Monuments Society and the state have made it into a nature reserve. Dikes have been removed, roads have become creeks, some houses have become ruins and the ten farming families have been bought out. The photograph on the left (taken in 1994) shows agricultural use, whereas in the photograph on the right (2006) the land has been left to grow wild.
