The new Jakarta Governor, Joko Widodo, has declared the main thoroughfare, a 5 km stretch that includes Jalan Gen. Sudirman (pictured here, and usually scene of heavy traffic congestion) to be a car and motorbike free zone on Sunday mornings. This has proven a popular move with the city's middle class who flood the area on the bicycles and rollerblades and to go jogging before it gets too hot at midday. With 10-plus million people living in the capital - 25 million, if the Greater Metropolitan area is counted - over 1000 cars are being added each day to Jakartas' roads. Gridlock is predicted sometime in 2014 unless something is done to alleviate the chronic traffic situation.
