The remains of Juznaya mining complex. The mine, which lies above the Arctic Circle, has recently closed after many decades. It was originally founded as a part of network of mines built by gulag prisoners during the Stalinist era. The Mayor of Vorkuta, Igor Leonidovich Shpektor, wants to create a gulag complex in the town where tourists would be able to stay and learn about gulag history.
