The road between Pattani and Yala in Southern Thailand is a dangerous place to be at dusk, this is when most of the bombings, shootings and outbreaks of violence in the area occur. There is on average one serious incident a month along this stretch of road. The insurgency in Southern Thailand began as a conflict between the Malay muslim population and central government, but now the boundaries have become blurred and various guerilla groups have become involved. No-one seems certain as to who is fighting who. As of March 2008, the insurgency had claimed as many as 3,000 lives.
