The rugby ground is an emergency assembly point at the newly finished Springhill corrections facility in Hamilton. The prison was opened by Prime Minister Helen Clark on 25/09/2007. The government has established the Regional Prisons Development Project to construct four new state of the art corrections facilities to accommodate an increasing prison population. New Zealand has one of the highest prison populations per capita in the developed world. This facility is the largest of the new facilities and will provide an additional 650 beds for male prisoners, and has been purpose built to meet their rehabilitative needs. It will accommodate prisoners with low to high-medium security classifications.
