The site of Debre Damo, a mountain and 6th century monastery in the north of Ethiopia, close to Axum and Adigrat. It is one of the earliest working Christian monasteries in the world. One of the reasons for its survival is its remoteness. Located at the top of an amda, a flat-topped mountain with forty-foot cliffs all around, it is only accessible by ropes. The building pictured is a mausoleum.
