The villagers of Domebra sell part of their cocoa crop under a fair trade initiative, which not only pays the farmers a fixed rate for their cocoa beans, regardless of fluctuating market prices, but a 'social premium' of $150 a tonne which helps fund community projects. This water pump, one such project, has become the social gathering place in the village. Before the pump was fitted villagers had to walk some miles to the nearest stream and bring the water back in containers, and the water was not always clean and would often be disease ridden.
