Rangoon (Yangon), Myanmar, BURMA

U Htein Lin with his family in Rangoon. With no access to ARV treatment U Htein Lin died in July. This photograph was taken in March. Every member of the family is HIV positive. Virtually all the strains of HIV now circulating Asia come from Burma. The Burmese authorities have done virtually nothing to stop the spread of the disease and only admitted the existance of the problem in 2002. With such a large migrant worker population and an unchecked crisis inside the country, Burma's AIDS crisis may be the greatest contributer of new types of HIV in the world.
