Lodz, POLAND

Witnesses take an oath during a tribunal session of the cash-for-corpes scandal. Funeral homes in the central city of Lodz paid emergency workers bribes to give them early tip-offs about deaths so the homes could snap up clients and claim the state 'funeral allowance', which was way above the normal funeral costs. Prosecutors say the defendants went a step further and killed patients. Two doctors and two ambulance workers were charged with the murder of 19 people.
