Wolfgang Beltracchi (born Wolfgang Fischer in 1951) painting at his studio. He is a German art forger and artist, who has admitted to producing hundreds of fake paintings. Beltracchi, his wife Helene, and two accomplices sold these as original works by famous artists including Max Ernst, Heinrich Campendonk, Fernand Leger and Kees van Dongen. In 2011, Beltracchi was sentenced to six years in prison and is still serving his sentence, but is allowed to leave prison every day for 15 hours. He now pursues a career as a painter in his own name and sells his canvases for 40 000-50 000 Euros. Wolfgang spends hours every day painting. As a forger, he spent months studying the artist's technique, personal interests, mental health, surroundings etc. But he claims he only needed a few hours to paint the actual fake painting.
