Gori, GEORGIA

Women carry bags of their belongings through the rubble after a Russian air strike, aiming for a munitions depot, hit a series of housing blocks, killing 17 civilians and injuring 264 in the town of Gori. Georgia launched a series of attacks in an effort to reclaim the breakaway region of South Ossetia, which has had de facto independence - and Russian backing - since the end of a conflict in 1992. The attacks prompted Russia to retaliate against positions within South Ossetia and Georgia.
