Goma, North Kivu, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

Women with fistula, which they contracted as a result of being brutally raped, living in a segregated community outside Goma. Such is the stigma from this condition that women affected have formed their own villages away from the rest of society. An estimated 400,000 women have been victims of sexual violence during the Democratic Republic of Congo's civil war. In the eastern states of the country a recent peace agreement struggles to keep warring factions from fighting, and as the chaos that accompanies war contines, so does the rape of women in the area. Rape is now so widespread that the medical aid charity, Medecins sans Frontieres, says that 75 percent of all the rape cases it deals with worldwide are in eastern Congo.
