Statoil, Norway's biggest oil company, bought Brigham Exploration Co. for about 4.4 billion USD, in cash, expanding in unconventional U.S. assets because of declining North Sea production. The North Dakota fracking oil boom has fuelled the local economy. It is based around the town of Williston, where hydraulic fracturing, also known as 'fracking', has enabled a vast reserve of previously unobtainable oil to be accessed.
