Young demonstrators with placards climb upon statues in the centre of Kiev. Supporters of opposition presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko gathered in their thousands in the city centre. The mass protests were called after allegations that Viktor Yanukovich had won the election by fraudulent means. The peaceful 'Orange Revolution', which saw thousands of people take to the streets, led to the results being quashed. A rerun held on 26/12/2004 resulted in Yushchenko being elected president.
