Mailuu-Suu, KYRGYZSTAN

Zoia and Luba, both in their 60s, collect re-useable metals from a dump in Mailuu Suu. Most of the metals collected are irradiated due to the uranium dump situated nearby. In 2006, Mailuu Suu was found to be one of the 10 most polluted cities in the world. Any metal found will be sold for two soms a kilo (about five cents, the price of one cigarette). Zoia usually earns between 20-30 Soms a day (35 to 55 Euro cents). She walks 2km everyday to get to the dump and eats only one piece of bread during the day.
