12-year-old Vanea rests in the prow of a fishing boat. He left school to work for a fisherman in the village of Sfistofca. The inhabitants of the Danube Delta live an isolated existance and make a living mainly by fishing and farming. The region's well-preserved delta eco-system was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
