Pattani, South Thailand, THAILAND

13 year old Daliah Masae grieves over her murdered father, Gayo Masae, who was shot on the steps of his mosque in Talok Ao village, Pattani. She holds a plate with his photograph that was presented to his family at a workshop for imams organised by the government. He is now the fourth imam who attended the workshop to have been killed. The insurgency in Southern Thailand began as a conflict between the Malay muslim population and central government, but now the boundaries have become blurred and various guerilla groups have become involved. No-one seems certain as to who is fighting who. As of March 2008, the insurgency had claimed as many as 3,000 lives.
