20 year old Lungi Ngidi (left) with her roommate after the end of the school day. Lungi's father left her family many years ago and her mother died of Aids in 2002, leaving Lungi to bring up her siblings on her own. With the help of Siyabona, a local NGO, Lungi has a study grant to attend As-Salaam College, 40km from her home. During the week she attends the college and shares a rented room with another student. Her brother Menzi is responsible for looking after their younger brother and sister while Lungi is away. Child-headed households such as this are becoming more common in South Africa, as the Aids epidemic continues to ravage the country.
