20 year old Phakamile Makhowance holds a bowl of food she has just made for her grandmother. She lives with her six brothers and sisters together with their grandmother and their orphaned niece in the KwaMahowande tribal land of KwaZulu Natal. The grandmother is too frail to look after the family so Phakamile has to take responsibility for the whole family. Child-headed households such as this are becoming more common in South Africa, as the Aids epidemic continues to ravage the country.
