57 year old Geelaas, from Kirkuk in Iraqi Kurdistan, in London's Hyde Park. Geelaas fled to the UK in 2003 after her husband was taken away by secret police. As a writer, Geelaas was sometimes critical of the government and had been detained in the past, she knew she had to escape. She says that despite all the hardships she endures here it is better than life in Iraq. Geelaas is one of an estimated 300,000 rejected asylum seekers living in the UK.
