A Burmese migrant labourer in a fishmonger's commercial warehouse. Migrant workers play an important role in the continued economic growth of Malaysia. Migrants from neighboring Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar and South Asian nations such as Nepal and Bangladesh make Malaysia the largest importer of labour in Asia. The government's use of neo-liberalist employment policies in the labour market, has meant that migrant workers provide cheap and informal labour in construction, manufacturing and plantation industries. In principle, most migrant workers are covered by the employment laws generally applicable in Malaysia. In practice, however, the lack of effective enforcement and the dependence of migrant workers on their employers and recruitment agents leave them vulnerable and without safeguards against mistreatment.
