A container ship crossing the most difficult part of the Panama Canal, the Culebra Cut. During the Panama Canal Expansion, which is due to open on 26 June 2016, this channel has been deepened. When complete the project will allow ships specified as New Panimax, 320.04m (1,050ft) (l) x 33.54m (110ft) (w) x 12.56m (41.2ft) (d), to pass through the canal. The works involve two new sets of locks at the Pacific and Atlantic ends and new channels leading to them as well as increasing the capacity of Lake Gatun which supplies water and would run dry given the increased requirements of the new locks. Also the canals existing channels will be made wider and deeper.
