Asmara, Eritrea

A detail of a door from the Capital Cinema, built between 1938 and 1943 by architect Ruppert Saviele. Asmara is a showcase of 1930s Italian Art Deco architecture. Initially brought to the region by colonial-era Italians, the style continued to flourish into the 1960s as local architects furthered the distinctive designs.

UNESCO is considering making the city a World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding Modernist architecture.
