A farmer with a handful of volcanic soil. The vineyards in the valley of La Geria. On this volcanic island a traditional farming system uses the covering of basaltic tephra on the soil in order to harvest grapes under extremely arid conditions. In this region it rains only twice as much as in the Sahara region. The crushed volcanic rocks keeps the soil humid and plays a role in rehabilitating the saline sodic soils.
