Kiev, UKRAINE

A group of miners, supporters of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, listen as he gives a speech. Many members of the crowd had travelled from the industrial east of the country, Yanukovich's main power base, to counter the mass demonstrations by his rival Viktor Yushchenko. That protest was called after allegations that Yanukovich had won the election by fraudulent means. The peaceful 'Orange Revolution', which saw thousands of people take to the streets, led to the results being quashed. A rerun held on 26/12/2004 resulted in Yushchenko being elected president.
