A male giant panda is sedated as a specimen is taken as part of an artificial insemination programme. Giant pandas have been recognised as an endangered species, being the rarest in the bear family. Insemination programmes run to encourage growth of the panda population, which is under threat from habitat loss, isolation and poaching.
