Betou, Likouala, REPUBLIC OF CONGO

A man marks logs at Likouala Timber, an Italian logging concession that has 525,000 hectares of land. Huge areas of land, larger than Switzerland, in Congo's most northern province, Likouala, have been granted to different logging companies. A lot of wood that traditionally went to European markets for furniture now goes through China. It is estimated around 40 percent of all hard wood is illegal.Companies build their own private roads. They can legally clear 50 metres of forest on either side of the road. This encourages encroachment into forest areas as it leads to increased poaching and illegal land use for agriculture.
