A man paddles a pirogue on the Chari River while a group of brood mares swim alongside as they head to Gore island, a spit of grassy land in the middle of the river. They are part of a group heading back to a farm near capital after four and a half months in the pastures of Goz Aiche. Amir Artine, a major owner, possessing about fifty horses, including two racing teams of a dozen steeds each, keeps the mares for breeding and improving his blood lines.
