Futaba, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan

A pile of bicycles left outside an abandoned high school that has been disused since March 2011 because of elevated radiation levels.

The entire population of Futaba was evacuated en masse after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Since 2013, only 4% of the town has been open to visitors and residents, who are only permitted to return during daylight hours. The town has remained uninhabitable and has an actual population of zero.
