A man rides on a cart pulled by two horses at a kolkhoz, or collective farm, in the village of Barushkovtsi near Zhytomyr. As the Communist system collapsed during the run-up to Ukraine's declaration of independence in 1991 food shorages became severe as people abandoned the collective farms to tend their own land and feed their own families.
