A man walks through the remaining minarets at the Musalla Complex. As well as a mosque, a madrassa and a mausoleum, when it was built, under the direction of Queen Gawhar Shad in 1417, there were once over twenty minarets but the complex was virtually wiped out by the the British and Russians during various wars, and in 1885 British engineers intentionally dynamited most of the minarets as they stood in the line of fire for their artillery. Today, only five minarets and Gowhar Shad's mausoleum remain.
