Parauapebas, Brazil

A migrant family who have travelled from Maranhao State arrive at a train station in Parauapebas on their way to Altamira. The construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam created the greatest wave of migration in Brazil in recent years as thousands headed to Altamira in the heart of the Amazon. At the peak of the construction for the hydroelectric dam, at the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015, the construction sites housed more than 25,000 workers, 70 percent of which were from other parts of the country, most from Maranhao State.
