Alfredo D'Amato

Anambo, Sao Tome & Principe

A monument on the coast in the north west of the island comemorates the place where the Portuguese first arrived. The islands of Sao Tome and Principe were uninhabited before the arrival of the Portuguese sometime around 1470. Discovered by Joao de Santarem and Pero Escobar, the Portuguese navigators decided that they would be good locations for bases to trade with the mainland.
