Yamal Peninsula, Siberia, RUSSIA

A reindeer team pulling sleds packed with supplies gets ready to plunge into a swollen stream during a midnight snow storm. The reindeer move northwards on their 1000 mile migration route every year. Nenets people move as these reindeer move, and depend on the animals for all their food, shelter, clothing and transport. Nenets men spend most of the day outdoors in order to keep the welfare and migration of the animals intact. The men track changes in habitat, food supply and ecology which may affect the reindeer's homeland and the Nenets livelihood. Here, a man lights a cigarette before getting ready to help teams cross the river.
