Gazemestan, KOSOVO

A Serbian priest makes a crucifix out of candles with four Cs ('Samo Sloga Serbina Spasava' - 'Only unity saves the Serbs') at the monument to the Battle of Kosovo Field (1389) at Gazemestan. Every year Serbs visit the site to hold a religious ceremony commemorating the battle, which they lost, and which they see as the moment when they lost control of their country and the Balkans to the Muslim Ottoman Empire which was in control for the next 500 years. It is necessary for the site to be protected by KFOR troops as the majority Albanian population have attempted to destroy the monument with explosives, since they reject any idea of Serb sovereignty in Kosovo.
