A sickle cell patient's information and identity card. One of the challenges faced by sickle cell disease patients in Germany is that they frequently encounter doctors who are unfamiliar with the condition and thus do not take their pain seriously (patients speak of it being assumed that they are drug addicts seeking morhine), or who are simply unsure of what to do. To this end, the German Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassaemia Association provides members with ID cards that details the nature of each patient's condition and provides basic guidance and contact information for their doctors.
