A squatter camp of plastic tents, known to its inhabitants as Bontekoe Town, which has emerged out of the desert over the past three years at the site of an abandoned diamond mine once owned by De Beers. The camp is constantly growing, with new arrivals turning up on a daily basis fleeing poverty and unemployment in Namaqualand and across the whole of southern Africa.
