A stretch of the Oueme River valley cleared for agriculture. Often the only trees left standing are 'useful' ones, such as the mango trees seen here. Over 90 percent of the nation's households are dependent on wood or charcoal for cooking. Together with one of the world's highest population growth rates and corresponding demand for agricultural land, this results in an alarming rate of forest loss.
