Altamira, Para, Brazil

A stretch of the Xingu river between the Belo Monte dam and Altamira, seen in 2011 before the dam's construction. The total area flooded by the reservoir was nearly 516 km2, and all these islands formed great toothpick-like patches of dead trees. Despite the flooding, which impacted a lot of vegetation native to the Xingu islands, the main environmental impact of the construction of Belo Monte was the dramatic reduction of water flow in the stretch below the dam.
