Port Klang, Selangor, Malaysia

A transgender woman sits on an empty plot between two abandoned pre-WWII buildings on Jalan Kem, once the town's busy main street. While the terminals of Port Klang today have grown to become the country's largest port and the twelfth busiest container port in the world, the town itself is full of abandoned, burnt-out and dilapidated pre-war buildings. A concrete flyover connecting Northport and Westport is only a few metres from the shop lots and as a consequence has devalued these colonial buildings and sucked the life from the area. Coffee shop operator Yap Yong Choon, 56, said many shops had closed down after the elevated highway opened more than 10 years ago. He said the highway had taken away the glitter from the once popular Jalan Kem. 'It was the busiest street then. Now you can see for yourself the unoccupied and abandoned premises'.
