Kroo Bay, Freetown, Sierra Leone

A woman and a pig walks through muddy sewage and rubbish on the banks of the small river that flows through Kroo Bay into the sea. Kroo Bay, a slum built on a rubbish dump on the eastern outskirts of the capital Freetown, houses around 6,500 people. The rubbish that is washed down the hill from the city toward Kroo Bay is compacted in the bay to the extent that houses can be built on the surface, thus reclaiming land from the sea.
