Pankhali, Bangladesh

A woman chops firewood outside her home. The disappearance of the region's traditional rice fields, and their replacement by shrimp ponds, has meant the disappearance of herds of cows and their precious fuel, dung. To cook meals, the villagers increasingly use wood that they collect from the great mangrove of the Sunderbans, thus contributing to its degeneration.
